Engine Overview and Common Failures
Engine number AHL is located on the right, at the junction of the engine with the gearbox. Oil consumption The most well-known problem of power units in this family is oil consumption, which usually appears after 150-200 thousand km and only increases with mileage. The standard reason for this is worn oil scraper rings and piston rings clogging. Floating RPM The main culprits of the unstable operation of this engine are clogged injectors, faulty fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator, ignition coil crack, EGR valve malfunctions, and for versions with variable intake geometry system, the drive can jam. Emulsion in the reservoir Oil usually enters the cooling system due to a weak heat exchanger gasket, but there are also cases of cylinder head gasket failure and cracks in the head from overheating. Sometimes, the aluminum block cracks around the third and fourth cylinders. Other deficiencies Lubricant leaks are regularly encountered, especially if the crankcase ventilation system is clogged, as well as coolant leaks, usually caused by a cracked plastic tee in the cooling system. The exhaust manifold often breaks, and when the timing belt breaks, the valves almost always bend.
