Engine Overview and Common Failures

Most often, owners of the A8 with this engine complain about increased oil consumption. The usual cause is debris from the catalytic converter getting stuck in the cylinders. Since there are no check valves for the oil channels in the cylinder head, the cold chains can rattle. Another culprit of timing chain noise here can be wear on the hydraulic tensioner. The water pump, fuel injection pump, as well as the exhaust system's bellows often have a low service life and frequently burn out.
