Engine Overview and Common Failures

The weight of the 1GR-FE engine according to the catalog is 166 kg. The engine number 1GR-FE is located at the junction of the block and the gearbox. Engine overheating. This is a reliable unit without any weak points in the design, and the most common reason for service visits is a blown cylinder head gasket after severe engine overheating. In the second generation of engines, the intake system has been redesigned, and this problem has disappeared. VVTi clutch crackling. Owners often encounter a crackling sound from the phase regulators when starting the car, but many continue to drive despite the broken clutch and unstable operation of the unit. The phase regulators are equipped with mesh filters, and cleaning them increases the clutch's lifespan. Fluctuating idle speed. The main cause of fluctuating idle speed and unstable engine operation is contamination of the throttle body, injectors, and sometimes the fuel filter in the tank. In the second generation, the culprit is a clogged secondary air supply valve. Other problems. Weak points of the engine also include an inefficient crankcase ventilation system, short-lived ignition coils, water pump, and lambda sensors that are sensitive to fuel quality. Don't forget to adjust the valves; many versions of the engine do not have hydraulic compensators.
