The 2.4-liter gasoline engine General Motors LE9 was produced in the USA from 2008 to 2018 and was installed in popular models of the company, such as Chevrolet Captiva, HHR, and Malibu. This powertrain was simply an updated version of the LE5 engine and is similar to the Opel A24XE. The second generation of the Ecotec family includes: LDK, LNF, LE5, LAF, LEA, and LHU.

Engine Overview and Common Failures

The LE9 engine weighs 145 kg according to the catalog. The LE9 engine number is located on the oil filter housing. The main complaints from owners are related to the rather limited timing chain lifespan. The chain tensioner for the balance shafts is not known for its reliability (not included in the timing chain kit). If the chains are tightened too much during replacement, new phase regulators will need to be purchased. After 100,000 km of mileage, lubricant consumption due to ring deposits is often encountered. It is also worth noting the consistently appearing cracks on the exhaust manifold.
