Engine Overview and Common Failures
The engine number B47 is located at the junction of the block and the gearbox. The AGR valve is most commonly associated with problems in this engine, which is called AGR here. In the early years, the valve could become clogged at 30,000 km and even a recall campaign was conducted. When it becomes stuck in the open position, it can cause the intake manifold to overheat and rupture.
The second most frequent issue reported in service is the contamination of the intake manifold and channels in the cylinder head, leading to loss of power and unstable engine operation. In severe cases, the swirl flaps in the intake can become stuck or break off.
In general, the timing chains on B-series engines perform well and last much longer than those on N-series engines. However, with excessively aggressive use, they can stretch up to 200,000 km. There is already a budget-friendly procedure for replacing these chains without removing the power unit.
Like all modern diesel engines, these engines require high-quality fuel, maintenance, and consumables, otherwise you will encounter numerous problems with the Common Rail system. The exhaust gas cleaning system and the particulate filter can also cause quite a bit of trouble.
