Engine Overview and Common Failures
The weight of the 4A-FE engine according to the catalog is 128 kg. The engine number 4A-FE is located to the right of the exhaust manifold. Lean Burn series engines are not recommended in services primarily because they are very demanding in terms of fuel quality, use expensive platinum spark plugs, and suffer from sudden power drops that are almost impossible to get rid of. Knocking under the hood: A-series engines do not have pronounced weak points and all their problems come from age. But there is still one trademark issue: knocking of piston pins at high mileage. First, of course, check the thermal clearances of the valves, as they often cause knocking. Electrical problems: A burned-out lambda sensor often causes a sharp increase in fuel consumption, and a faulty temperature sensor leads to the engine not starting at all. The absolute pressure and throttle position sensors also often fail. Oil consumption: After 200,000 km, oil consumption often appears up to 1 liter per 1000 km traveled. The reason may be worn oil control caps and piston rings sticking. Minor breakdowns: This engine frequently experiences minor issues such as quickly clogged injectors and throttle valve, causing fluctuating RPM, misfiring, and vibrations. Failures in the ignition system are common, periodic crankshaft seal leaks, and so on.
