Engine Overview and Common Failures

The dry weight of the G4EH engine according to the catalog is 107.7 kg. The engine number G4EH is located at the front, at the junction of the block and the cylinder head. Floating revs. This motor is quite reliable and the main complaints are related to its unstable operation. The usual causes are clogged nozzles, contamination of the throttle body or EGR, as well as contacts on spark plugs, cracked ignition coils, and high-voltage wires. Hydraulic compensators. Units of this family have a not very large resource of hydraulic compensators, often they start knocking even before 80,000 km of mileage and many owners replace them. The reason may be a drop in lubrication pressure due to wear of the oil pump plunger. Timing belt breakage. The timing belt is designed for 60 or 90 thousand km of mileage, depending on the version of the unit, however, it often breaks earlier and usually ends with valve bending. When replacing the belt, it is better to install a new water pump, as its resource is also small. Oil consumption. After 200,000 km, the power unit may consume up to one liter of oil per 1000 km. The culprits are usually hardened oil seal caps and they need to be replaced. The reason may be stuck rings, but then you can simply clean them. Other flaws. The weak points of this engine include an unreliable starter, short-lived engine mounts, regular lubricant leaks, and the appearance of the Check Engine due to a burnt-out muffler corrugation. Also, the emergency fuel shut-off mechanism often works here.
