Engine Overview and Common Failures

The dry weight of the G4EA engine according to the catalog is 99.7 kg. The G4EA engine number is located at the front, at the junction of the block and the cylinder head. Carburetor: All major problems with this engine are related to the quirks of the Mikuni Solex carburetor, which can only be repaired or properly adjusted in select service centers. Ignition system components: Another weak point here is the relatively short lifespan of the ignition system components. Sometimes they can start making noise as early as 80,000 km, and replacing them can be quite expensive. The main cause is the drop in oil pressure due to wear of the oil pump plunger. Timing belt breakage: According to the manufacturer's official regulations, the timing belt should be replaced every 60,000 km. However, there are reports online of belt breakage at lower mileage, often resulting in valve bending. The lifespan of the water pump in this engine is also not very long, so it is better to replace it at the same time as the timing belt. Oil consumption: Closer to 200,000 km, the engine usually starts consuming oil up to 1 liter per 1,000 km, mostly due to hardened oil control rings. Replacing them is not very expensive. However, it can also be caused by worn-out piston rings, in which case a decarbonization process may suffice. Other drawbacks: Owners on dedicated forums complain about regular oil or coolant leaks, an unreliable starter, strong vibrations due to worn powertrain mounts, and sudden activation of the emergency fuel cutoff mechanism.
