Engine Overview and Common Failures
The weight of the G4FC engine is 99.8 kg. The engine number G4FC is located at the front, at the junction with the gearbox. In the early years of production, the engines were equipped with a large "rams horn" exhaust manifold, but with the transition to Euro 5 emission standards, it was replaced by a modern collector. Since then, there has been a problem with scoring in the cylinders due to catalyst crumbs.
The cylinder block is made of aluminum with an open cooling jacket and thin liners, which are not very rigid. During active use or regular overheating, the cylinders often become elliptical, leading to progressive oil consumption.
The timing chain has a low lifespan. Under normal driving conditions, the timing chain can last for a considerable mileage, usually closer to 200,000 km. However, if the driver constantly revs the engine to high RPMs, the lifespan is reduced by half. Additionally, contamination of the lubrication system often causes the hydraulic tensioner to fail and seize.
In terms of minor issues: the generator belt often squeals due to a weak tensioner, the engine mounts do not last long, oil leaks frequently occur from under the valve cover, and erratic RPMs are often caused by dirty fuel injectors or throttle bodies.
