Engine Overview and Common Failures
The weight of the G4FD engine is 101.9 kg. The engine number G4FD is located at the front, at the junction with the gearbox. The most common problem here is the quick formation of carbon deposits on the intake valves, which naturally occurs due to the presence of a direct fuel injection system in the engine. The engine loses power significantly, starts to run rough, but decarbonization usually helps. Cylinder scoring is also often found on all Gamma family engines. The weak catalyst is to blame, which quickly deteriorates due to poor fuel, and its particles are drawn into the engine combustion chambers, leaving scratches on the walls. Oil consumption can also be caused by worn piston rings or elliptical cylinders. Here, the aluminum block with an open cooling jacket and thin-walled cast iron liners, which often become bent over long distances, is to blame. Despite the fact that a very reliable roller chain timing mechanism is installed here, reports of its replacement at a mileage of 100-150 thousand kilometers are quite common. Keep in mind that there are cases of chain skipping and constant valve-piston interference. Owners of vehicles with this engine often complain about oil leaks due to weak gaskets, unstable idle speed after throttle body contamination, and also about the low durability of the water pump.
