Engine Overview and Common Failures

The weight of the EP3C engine with attachments is 119 kg. The EP3C engine number is located at the front, at the junction with the gearbox. The timing chain has a low lifespan. In the updated engine, the timing chain lasts for about 50,000 km before it needs attention, but it will most likely require attention around 100-120 thousand km. Thankfully, there are many affordable replacement kits available for sale. As a result of the upgrade, the engine now has an adjustable oil pump with pressure regulation, which often seizes. If this happens during low-performance mode, it can quickly damage the crankshaft bearings and most likely the camshafts as well. The Valvetronic and Vanos systems regularly cause problems for owners, and it is exacerbated by the fact that not every mechanic is willing to repair such components. The phase regulator valve of the Vanos system has special filters, but their lifespan has not increased. Other engine problems occur less frequently than before, but still commonly include excessive oil consumption due to piston ring deposition, valve seat destruction and displacement, as well as regular leaks of lubricant and coolant. Components such as the water pump, thermostat, or lambda sensor are considered consumables.
