Engine Overview and Common Failures
The weight of the EP6 engine with attachments is 117 kg. The EP6 engine number is located on the front at the junction with the gearbox. The low lifespan of the timing chain is the most well-known problem of these units, sometimes requiring replacement of the tensioner, idler, star, and chain itself at only 50,000 km. There are now many alternatives available that usually last a little longer. Another common issue encountered by owners of cars with this engine is the vacuum pump belt slipping, which can lead to damage to the exhaust camshaft, the drive gear of the star, or the breakage of the timing chain, resulting in bent valves and subsequent engine overhaul. These units are also notorious for high oil consumption, which often appears at low mileage. The cause is usually ring sticking, wear of oil control rings or the VKG membrane, and carbon deposits from burned oil clog the intake manifold and hinder valve closure. Other engine problems include malfunctions of the Vanos phase regulators and the Valvetronic system, destruction and frequent loss of valve seats, regular leaks of lubricants and antifreeze, and components such as the thermostat, water pump, and lambda sensor are practically consumables.
