Engine Overview and Common Failures
The weight of the EP3 engine with attachments is 118 kg. The EP3 engine number is located at the front where it meets the gearbox. One of the main issues with engines of this series is the low lifespan of the components of the timing chain mechanism. Components such as the sprocket, tensioner, guide, and the chain itself may need replacement before reaching 50,000 km. This especially applies to engines from the early years of production, although reliability has slightly improved over time.
Another common problem with this engine is the vacuum pump belt slipping, which can result in damage to the exhaust camshaft and the gear of its drive wheel. It often leads to the timing chain breaking and causing valve bending.
Power units of this family typically experience oil consumption at low mileage due to piston ring sticking, worn oil control rings, or a faulty PCV membrane. They are also known for constant leaks of lubricant and coolant from various places.
Other issues with the engine include problems with the Vanos variable valve timing system and the Valvetronic system. Valve seat destruction with valves falling straight into the cylinders is a frequently encountered issue. Additionally, components like thermostats, water pumps, and lambda sensors are considered to be consumables.
