Engine Overview and Common Failures

The weight of the EP6CDT engine with attachments is 137 kg. The engine number EP6CDT is located at the front, at the junction with the gearbox. The main problem of this engine is the unreliable high-pressure fuel pump of the direct injection system, its lifespan sometimes does not exceed 50,000 km, and the replacement cost is over 30,000 rubles. The intake valves also quickly become clogged with carbon deposits and fail to close properly. The timing chain has a low lifespan compared to its predecessor, in the updated engine the chain lasts a bit longer, but still not much: previously it was replaced at 50,000 km, now closer to 100,000 km. It is good that inexpensive timing chain kits from alternative manufacturers are available. The oil pump wedge is often a problem for this engine, as it has a new adjustable pressure-flow oil pump. If it gets stuck during minimal performance mode, it can quickly damage the crankshaft bearings and even the camshaft. There is also a high oil consumption. The thermostat and water pump are not reliable, so overheating is not uncommon. This leads to rapid hardening of the valve stem seals in the cylinder head and immediate oil consumption. Oil consumption can be caused by piston ring sticking or membrane wear in the PCV system. Other problems of the engine include carbon buildup in the intake manifold and oil supply pipes due to oil foaming and frequent overheating, which leads to unstable engine operation and turbocharger failure. Engines of this series also constantly suffer from oil and coolant leaks.
