In the early years, nickel-silicon coating was used on the cylinders and it quickly deteriorated. The engine is very sensitive to overheating, which immediately leads to cylinder head damage and gasket failure. The frequent cause of ignition misfires is usually due to clogged hydraulic compensators. The throttle valve of the DISA system can come off and fall into the cylinders. Another weak point is the membrane of the crankcase ventilation valve. After 100,000 km mileage, the Vanos phase regulation system often requires repair. At a mileage of 200,000 km, excessive oil consumption often occurs due to worn piston rings.
