Engine Overview and Common Failures

The N42 engine weighs 135 kg according to the catalog. The engine number N42 is located at the junction of the block and the cylinder head. The most common problems for owners are failures in the Valvetronic and Vanos systems. The timing chain and its tensioner often require replacement at a mileage of 100-150 thousand kilometers. The engine runs very hot, which significantly affects the lifespan of the oil seals. Non-original oil may not withstand these temperatures and cause the engine to seize. When replacing spark plugs, the expensive ignition coils frequently fail.
