The main problems of the engine are related to its extremely high operating temperature. First of all, the valve stem seals quickly freeze and oil consumption increases. Then, the solidified lubricant clogs the oil channels and damages the Valvetronic system. Even before reaching 100,000 km, attention will likely be required for the timing chain or VANOS system. Valve cover leaks usually occur at mileages between 50,000 and 70,000 kilometers.
