Engine Overview and Common Failures

If compared to VW turbo engines, this engine is significantly more reliable. Owners often complain about a quick failure of ignition coils. The reason for unstable idle speed is usually a dirty throttle body or EGR. Timing belts last approximately 90,000 km, and if any of them break, the valves get bent. On high mileage, hydraulic lifters often make noise, and piston rings get stuck.
