Engine Overview and Common Failures

First of all, it is worth noting the very rapid wear of the camshaft lobes and rockers. Many engine problems are associated with failures of the electronically controlled Bosch VP44 fuel pump. Additionally, this engine is notorious for frequent oil leaks, especially from under the valve cover. On mileage exceeding 200,000 km, the turbocharger geometry often seizes due to contamination. Cheap oil can cause hydraulic lifters and pressure reduction valves to fail.
