Engine Overview and Common Failures

The service life of this engine directly depends on the quality of the applied oil. Due to the use of cheap lubricant, the camshafts and hydraulic lifters wear out. Additionally, due to contamination, the turbocharger geometry often seizes up and the EGR valve gets clogged. The weak attachment of the pump-injectors with a single bolt can loosen and cause leaks. On VAG forums, problems related to the tandem pump are frequently discussed.
