The 2.5-liter Volkswagen AKN 2.5 TDI diesel engine was produced from 1999 to 2003 and installed in the popular Passat [B5] (/engines/mazda/engine/B5) model, as well as in Audi models such as the A4 [B5] (/engines/mazda/engine/B5), A6 C5, and A8 D2. This engine is basically a modernized version of the well-known [AFB] (/engines/audi/engine/AFB) engine compatible with EURO 3 emission standards. Engine Overview and Common Failures

Most of the complaints are related to rapid wear of camshaft lobes or rocker arms. Frequent malfunctions of the electronically-controlled Bosch VP44 fuel injection pump also cause many issues. Additionally, this engine is prone to oil leaks at the joints and under the valve cover. The mechanism for turbocharger geometry adjustment may seize after a mileage of over 150,000 km. Weak points of the engine also include the viscous coupling bearing and the reduction valves.
