Engine Overview and Common Failures

At this point, the only weak spot of the internal combustion engine is the short-lived flywheel. Saving on diesel fuel often leads to expensive repairs of the fuel apparatus. Like in many modern diesel engines, the EGR valve quickly gets clogged with soot. The water pump here may fail before the scheduled timing belt replacement. Use oils with VW 507.00 or 509.00 approvals; otherwise, the particulate filter will not last long.
