Engine Overview and Common Failures

The weight of the Z18XER engine according to the catalog is 120 kg. The engine number Z18XER is located at the junction of the block and the gearbox. In the engines of the first years of production, there was a mass defect in the camshafts and phase regulators, but they have long been replaced under warranty. Currently, the main problem is the sticking of electromagnetic valves in the phase regulation system due to clogged mesh filters. Another weak point of these engines is the oil heat exchanger. Moreover, it leaks in both directions: it allows oil to pass into the coolant and vice versa, gradually diluting the lubricant, which reduces the life of the inserts and the oil pump. Electrical problems are also common, with many complaints on forums related to the electrical part of this power unit. The engine control unit (ECU) usually needs its connectors to be rewired. The electronically controlled thermostat and ignition coil module also often fail. Among other drawbacks, the valve membrane of the PCV valve causes a lot of trouble in this engine; it simply cracks and the engine starts running unstably. There are also frequent oil leaks, the cylinder head does not have hydraulic compensators, and the valve is bent when the timing belt breaks.
