Engine Overview and Common Failures

The weight of the F14D4 engine according to the catalog is 120 kg. The engine number F14D4 is located at the junction of the block with the gearbox. In the early years of production, phase regulators were installed, which served no more than 30,000 km, then their service life increased, but cases of replacement before a mileage of 100,000 km are still not uncommon. Also, due to low-quality lubrication, the grids of electromagnetic valves quickly become clogged. This unit is equipped with a quite temperamental throttle assembly with an electric drive. Usually, dirt getting on the throttle valve connections or the engine control unit (ECU) is to blame for its failures, but sometimes the cause is the bending of contacts and wear of the potentiometer track. According to the official regulations, the timing belt replacement is only done every 160,000 km, but it does not always last that long. And in case of a belt breakage, the valves are often bent. Impulse ring of the camshaft is frequently broken during unqualified replacement. Other drawbacks of this power unit include the expansion tank cap, ignition coil module, electronic thermostat, or constantly leaking heat exchanger. And do not forget about adjusting the valve clearances, as there are no hydraulic compensators here.
