Engine Overview and Common Failures

The weight of the VAZ 2121 engine according to the catalog is 121 kg. The engine number of the VAZ 2121 is located above the oil filter. Wear on the camshaft: A well-known problem with classic VAZ units is the rapid wear of the camshaft due to the neglect of valve clearance adjustment procedures or lubrication savings. Oil consumption: Complaints about oil consumption are often found on forums. The usual cause is severe wear of the oil control caps and piston rings, or a clogged crankcase ventilation system. Engine overheating: Almost all remaining problems are somehow related to engine overheating after the failure of the thermostat, water pump, or cooling fan. Their lifespan is short. Other problems: It is also worth noting frequent leaks from the valve cover, rear crankshaft seal, and the not very durable timing chain, sometimes requiring replacement at 100,000 km mileage.
