Engine Overview and Common Failures

The weight of the VAZ 21214 engine according to the catalog is 122 kg. The number of the VAZ 21214 engine can be found in two places. Oil consumption is a common complaint among Niva owners with this engine, and the main culprits are worn rings or oil control rings, as well as the crankcase ventilation system, which fails to perform its duties. Another well-known weak point of the engine is the unreliable chain tensioner, which starts to slip at around 50,000 km, significantly reducing the lifespan of the timing chain. Many problems with this engine are caused by overheating, which can be attributed to the limited lifespan of the thermostat, water pump, and electric cooling fan. Other issues worth mentioning include short-lived hydraulic lifters in early versions and regular oil leaks from the valve cover or rear crankshaft seal.
