Oil consumption is a common complaint among Niva owners with this engine, and the main culprits are worn rings or oil control rings, as well as the crankcase ventilation system, which fails to perform its duties. Another well-known weak point of the engine is the unreliable chain tensioner, which starts to slip at around 50,000 km, significantly reducing the lifespan of the timing chain. Many problems with this engine are caused by overheating, which can be attributed to the limited lifespan of the thermostat, water pump, and electric cooling fan. The 1.6-liter, 8-valve engine VAZ 11189 was first introduced by the company in 2016 and is essentially an adaptation of the VAZ 11186 power unit to meet Euro 5 environmental standards.
