Engine Overview and Common Failures

The weight of the OM603 engine according to the catalog is 235 kg. The OM603 engine number is located at the front, at the junction with the cylinder head. This diesel unit is very prone to vibration, which affects the lifespan of its mounts. The timing chain lasts no more than 250,000 km, and if it breaks, the cylinder head will have to be replaced. The cylinder head gasket often fails due to cheap or old antifreeze, or even water. Hydraulic lifters are sensitive to low-quality oil and can start making noise before reaching 80,000 km. Other engine problems are usually related to the vacuum control system of the injection pump.
