Engine Overview and Common Failures

The weight of the OM604 engine according to the catalog is 180 kg. The engine number OM604 is located at the front, at the junction with the cylinder head. In terms of durability, these iron engines are very reliable and have a lifespan of approximately 400-500 thousand km. The main problem with this diesel engine is the temperamental fuel pump from Lucas. Over time, the gaskets in the injection pump can deteriorate, and not everyone is willing to take on its repair. The timing chain can stretch as early as 200-250 thousand km, which is fatal for the cylinder head. Additionally, the cylinder head is highly sensitive to overheating and can sometimes simply crack.
