Engine Overview and Common Failures

The weight of the OM616 engine according to the catalog is 225 kg. The engine number is located at the junction of the block and the cylinder head. The rear crankshaft seal is the most well-known weak point of this very reliable and durable diesel engine, often causing leaks that can lead to oil starvation and expensive repairs. In terms of the fuel system, the Bosch M injection pump with vacuum control often breaks its rack drive diaphragm, although the pumps of the updated MW and M/RSF series units no longer have this problem. Additionally, the auxiliary pump can unexpectedly fail due to wear on the seals. Despite being equipped with a double-row timing chain, it doesn't last for a very long time. It is commonly replaced around every 200-250 thousand kilometers, often together with tensioners and sprockets.
