Engine Overview and Common Failures
The weight of the OM617 engine according to the catalog is 265 kg. The engine number is located at the junction of the block and the cylinder head. In the early years, diesel engines before 1979 often experienced cracks in the block around the fifth cylinder and crankshaft failure. There was a design miscalculation that was later corrected.
The turbocharger in this engine does not have a long lifespan and cannot withstand immediate shutdown after long drives at high speeds. It is advisable to install a turbo timer.
The timing chain in this engine is equipped with a very powerful but not the most durable double-row timing chain. Approximately every 200-250 thousand km, it needs to be replaced along with the tensioners and sprockets.
Other issues reported by owners of these diesel engines include very noisy operation, strong vibrations, and frequent oil leaks, especially through the rear crankshaft seal, which tends to wear out. It is also worth noting that the fuel priming pump is not very reliable and often leaks.
