Engine Overview and Common Failures
The weight of the PNDA engine is 91 kg (excluding accessories). The Ford PNDA engine number is located at the front, where it meets the gearbox. Piston knocks are common in this modern engine with an aluminum block and an open cooling jacket. The cylinders often become oval-shaped by 100,000 km, leading to piston knocking. However, oil consumption is usually not a problem, so many people do not pay attention and continue driving.
In the earlier models of this series, the Ti VCT phase adjusters often developed knocking issues by 100,000 km. However, since 2007, upgraded couplings have been installed, which last much longer. Currently, the main problems are caused by regularly failing electromagnetic valves.
Other weaknesses of this power unit include an unreliable fuel pump, constantly breaking high-voltage wires, and leaking crankshaft seals. And don't forget about the periodic valve clearance adjustment - there are no hydraulic compensators.
