Engine Overview and Common Failures

The weight of the DV6TED4 engine according to the catalog is 145 kg. The engine number DV6TED4 is located on the cylinder block. In the early years of production, these engines suffered from rapid wear of the camshaft lobes, as well as the destruction of the chain hydraulic tensioner located between the camshafts. Over time, the quality of manufacturing these components has improved and the problem has practically disappeared. Models equipped with a diesel particulate filter were fitted with an air dosing valve with two flaps, which often leaked oil onto the timing belt and auxiliary units. Air leaks are also common in versions without a diesel particulate filter, but this time into the intake. The reliable Garrett GT15V turbocharger, which is known for its performance on other engines, seems to have a suspiciously short lifespan here. Usually, the cause of its premature failure is a clogged coarse filter located in the oil pipe fitting that supplies lubrication to the turbocharger. Like any modern diesel engine, there are other weak points: the EGR valve quickly becomes dirty and gets stuck, the diesel particulate filter doesn't last long, the heat-resistant washers under the injectors often burn out, and if the timing belt breaks, the rocker arms break and the camshaft lobes get damaged.
