Engine Overview and Common Failures

The dry weight of the C30SE engine is 186 kg, with attachments it is 235 kg. The engine number C30SE is located at the junction of the block and the cylinder head. Cracks in the cylinder head. This is a very reliable and durable unit, without any pronounced weak points, but its aluminum head does not tolerate overheating and tuning: cracks appear on it immediately from the valve seats to the spark plug wells. That's why the cylinder head assembly costs as much as a whole engine at a dismantling station. Oil in the spark plug wells. Gaskets and seals here are not known for their durability, and frequent overheating exacerbates the situation. So, the presence of oil in the spark plug wells indicates a failure of one of the gaskets. And if their replacement doesn't help, check the condition of the valve cover bolt seals. Timing chain. In general, the timing chain is quite reliable here, and many drivers drive up to 300-400 thousand kilometers without problems. However, excessively active drivers often have to replace chains already at 100,000 km. In this engine, the shoe of the long timing chain tensioner wears out quite quickly. Other disadvantages. On forums, people often complain about the ignition system and especially high voltage wires, the engine speed constantly fluctuates due to the contamination of fuel injectors, EGR or throttle body, and hydraulic lifters do not tolerate low-quality oil and can start making noise even before reaching 100,000 km.
