Engine Overview and Common Failures

The N18 series engines are more reliable than their predecessors, the N14 engines, but they still frequently break down. The temperamental direct injection system with piezo injectors presents many problems. Additionally, the Vanos phase regulators and the Valvetronic system regularly fail here. Many complaints on specialized forums are related to excessive oil consumption and coking in the intake. The timing chain, thermostat, and water pump have a rather limited lifespan in this engine.
