Engine Overview and Common Failures

The most well-known problem of these engines is oil consumption and intake coking. The components of the timing chain drive, especially the tensioner, have a relatively low lifespan. The Vanos variable valve timing system and Valvetronic system also have a shorter service life. Additionally, engines of this family are notorious for regular leaks of lubricant and antifreeze. Weak points of the engine include the water pump, thermostat, and secondary oxygen sensor.
