Engine Overview and Common Failures

The most problematic aspect here is the temperamental direct fuel injection system. In second place is the high lubricant consumption and increased coking in the intake. The timing chain has a modest lifespan here, often lasting less than 50,000 km. The vacuum pump is also known for its low reliability, as well as the Vanos variable valve timing system. Other weak points of the engine include the thermostat, water pump, and lambda sensors.
