The updated engine is more reliable than its predecessor, but there are still some problems. The timing chain and its tensioner have a modest lifespan, sometimes less than 100,000 km. The Valvetronic system and Vanos-type variable valve timing regulators also have a relatively short service life. Engines from this family are prone to oil consumption and intake coking.
