Engine Overview and Common Failures

The main problem of these power units is oil consumption and coking in the intake. The timing chain and especially its tensioner have a rather modest lifespan here. The Valvetronic system and Vanos-type phase regulators also have a relatively short service life. All engines from this family are known for regular oil and coolant leaks. Weak points of such engines include the thermostat, water pump, and lambda sensors.
