Engine Overview and Common Failures
The weight of the K9K engine according to the catalog is 145 kg. The engine number is located at the junction of the block and the cylinder head. The most well-known problem of such engines is the rotation of the connecting rod bearings. This happens especially often with engines from Europe, where the oil is changed every 30,000 km. The recommended maintenance schedule prescribes a lubrication replacement interval of 10,000 km and bearing rotations are rare, but many owners still prefer to replace the bearings every 60,000 km.
The fuel system from Delphi is the main type used in diesel engines manufactured before 2009. It cannot tolerate airlocks, clogged fuel filters, and poor quality diesel. Due to any of these reasons, it starts producing metal particles that primarily clog the injectors. This metallic debris also significantly reduces the lifespan of the turbocharger and the oil pump.
The fuel system produced by Siemens or Continental is much more reliable, however, the cost of repairing it is higher. The piezo injectors alone cost several times more. Therefore, it is difficult to definitively say which brand's fuel system is better.
Most diesel cars from Europe are equipped with a diesel particulate filter and an EGR valve, both of which have a tendency to get clogged. Many people choose not to repair them and simply remove them.
Engine failures due to a drop in oil pressure in the system are much less common. This is usually caused by the valve of the oil filter and the spring of the oil pressure relief valve.
