Engine Overview and Common Failures

The B234i engine is located in the front of the engine, next to the gearbox. All power units of this family are very reliable, especially the naturally aspirated ones. Most problems are caused by the balance shafts, and many simply remove them. Around 250,000 km, the timing chain often stretches and starts to make a loud noise. There are also many issues with leaks due to deteriorating hoses and pipes. Weak points of the engine also include the intake manifold, oil pump, and short-lived wiring.
