Engine Overview and Common Failures

The weight of the GW4D20 engine is 215 kg (including attachments). The GW4D20 engine number can be found on the cylinder block. The most well-known problem with this diesel engine is the head gasket failure due to overheating. The exact cause has not yet been determined, but it seems to be a design flaw. There is a large thread on forums dedicated to finding the culprit of this issue. Most modifications of this engine are equipped with the Delphi fuel system, and its injectors wear out quickly from any impurities in the diesel fuel. It is highly recommended for owners to change the filter more frequently and avoid filling the tank with anything that comes along. Other reported issues on forums include excessive oil consumption, leaks of lubricant and coolant, air entrainment in the fuel system, short lifespan of the water pump and turbocharger. Also, keep an eye on the condition of the timing belt, as it doesn't last long and can cause valve damage if it breaks.
