Engine Overview and Common Failures

The weight of the 4B11T engine according to the catalog is 134 kg. The engine number for the 4B11T is located at the junction of the block with the oil pan. The most well-known problem with this engine is the piston ring failure, the fragments of which scratch the cylinder walls and sometimes even bend the spark plug electrodes. Then these ring particles are sent into the exhaust and often damage the turbine. The timing chain has no problems on the naturally aspirated version of this unit and can last from 150,000 to 300,000 km, but in the turbocharged engine, its lifespan is shorter and replacement before reaching 50,000 km is not uncommon. It is often necessary to replace the phasers, which are quite expensive here. Other drawbacks include the need to keep the oil coolers clean, as this engine cannot tolerate overheating, and regularly replace the plastic rollers of the drive belt tensioner or it will come off. Weak points include the fuel pump and the frequently cracking exhaust manifold.
