Engine Overview and Common Failures

The weight of the 42D engine according to the catalog is 175 kg. The engine number 42D is located at the base of the oil dipstick. Until 1999, there was a widespread problem with sleeve sagging and engine failure. Then the cylinder block was modernized and a sleeve retaining ring appeared. In the same year, the highly unreliable GEMS injection system was replaced with Bosch Motronic. Updated units after 1999 often suffer from microcracks in the block. Troubles are also caused by finicky electrical sensors, as well as the fuel pump.
