Engine Overview and Common Failures

The weight of the J3 engine according to the catalog is 243.9 kg. The J3 engine number is located at the junction of the engine block and the cylinder head. The main problem of this diesel engine is the finicky fuel equipment, Common Rail Delphi. There are many cases described online where the fuel injection pump started producing shavings, clogging the entire system. Therefore, a popular service is to modify this engine to an old Bosch VE4 pump. Electrical problems cause quite a headache for owners of vehicles with this diesel engine. Usually, the cause is a short circuit in the wiring or a malfunction in the engine control unit (ECU). We recommend contacting a specialized service that knows the weak points of this unit. The used oil pump of this engine significantly decreases in performance, and the drop in lubrication pressure reduces the lifespan of the turbocharger and hydraulic compensators. It's fortunate that the crankshaft bearings rarely get to the point of rotation failure. Other malfunctions that can occur include: mass air flow sensor, EGR valve, and all quick disconnect fittings, which frequently lead to air leaks. Additionally, the rear heater pipes of the Kia Carnival often corrode, causing coolant loss.
