Engine Overview and Common Failures

The weight of the D4FD engine according to the catalog is 167.7 kg. The engine number D4FD is located at the junction of the engine and the transmission. The main problem for the owner is the rapid contamination of the intake manifold, equipped with swirl flaps. It has to be cleaned every 50,000 km. The flap drive regularly comes off the hinges and they simply stop working. The fuel system of this power unit, CR Bosch, is highly reliable, but only if you don't pour anything into the tank and especially when it comes to Euro 6 diesel versions. Complaints are often only about the failure of the fuel pressure regulator and the lift pump. All versions of this engine are equipped with a soot filter, which can cause trouble. An increase in oil level indicates a failure of its regeneration and means that it is already clogged. Quite often, fuel can get into the oil due to a worn out seal of the injection pump. The timing chains of all U-series diesels do not have a long lifespan and stretch up to 100,000 km, but for the 1.7-liter engine, they last longer and are usually replaced at 200,000 km. It is worth noting that with excessive stretching, the chain can skip and bend the valves. Among other complaints on forums, it is worth mentioning the relatively frequent lubricant leaks. It is also necessary to regularly clean the EGR valve and the throttle valve.
