Engine Overview and Common Failures

The weight of the D4HB engine according to the catalog is 215.5 kg. The engine number D4HB is located in the area of the accessory belt. This diesel engine is equipped with a Common Rail Bosch CP4 fuel system with piezo injectors, which cannot tolerate low-quality diesel fuel and quickly causes the high-pressure fuel pump (TNVD) to fail. Then the pump starts pushing metal shavings, which spread throughout the system and clog the injectors. The timing chain drive (GRM) here is quite reliable and can easily reach a mileage of 200,000 km, although some owners of early models have encountered issues with the hydraulic chain tensioner. Noise coming from the GRM chains usually indicates that the crankshaft pulley damper is worn out. Of course, there are all the typical problems of modern diesel engines, such as EGR valve clogging at around 100,000 km and issues with the diesel particulate filter (DPF), which has roughly twice the lifespan. The glow plug relay often fails or its wiring gets damaged. On dedicated forums, users often complain about the variable geometry turbocharger actuator rod getting stuck and the boost pressure sensor failing, but the turbocharger itself tends to last a long time. There were also cases of sudden cylinder head gasket failure on engines from the early production years.
