Engine Overview and Common Failures

The weight of the WL-T engine is 234 kg (with attachments). The WL-T engine number is located on a platform near the fuel injection pump. Cracks in the cylinder head are common. It is a reliable and durable diesel unit, but it is very sensitive to overheating. If gases appear in the expansion tank, simply replacing the gasket is not enough, as cracks in the cylinder head are usually discovered and it becomes necessary to look for a cylinder head on dismantling. The seals of the crankshaft and camshaft are another weak point of this unit, often requiring replacement when changing the timing belt. Also, oil often leaks from under the valve cover or intake manifold. Other disadvantages mentioned by owners on specialized forums include a relatively short lifespan of glow plugs, quirks of the electronically-controlled fuel injection pump, and weak exhaust manifold studs. And don't forget about adjusting the thermal clearances, as the valves tend to burn out quite frequently.
