Overview and Common Failures
Body and Interior
The paint coating is thin and chips easily rust, but the body doesn't corrode quickly. Rust can be easily found around the windshield and on the edges of the doors or hood. The interior is spacious and made of inexpensive yet attractive materials. However, it tends to show signs of wear and tear by 100,000 km. Owners often replace the stereo system and steering column wiring from the electrical components in the cabin.
Engine
The 2.4-liter gasoline engine G4KE is reliable, but it has two weak points. Firstly, there can be scuffing due to catalyst crumbs entering the combustion chamber. Secondly, bearing rotation occurs after a drop in lubrication pressure. The 2.2-liter turbocharged diesel engine D4HB is very good, but used cars with this engine tend to be more expensive. Its main problems are related to the fuel system or EGR valve. Also, pay attention to the condition of the timing chain as it can stretch prematurely.
Transmission
The 6-speed manual transmissions M6GF2 and M6LF1 are very sturdy, but the clutch has limited travel. The 6-speed automatic transmissions A6MF2 and A6LF3 are also reliable and have a longer lifespan. Most of the issues come from the components of the full-time transmission. Regular oil changes and lubrication of spline connections are essential. However, even well-maintained vehicles may experience clutch failures around 50,000 km.
Suspension
The suspension is quite strong and can withstand up to 100,000 km, except for the stabilizer bushings. However, crossover models with larger discs often have worn-out hub bearings. Regular off-road driving significantly reduces the lifespan of shock absorbers and their mounts.
Brakes
The brakes are not very strong but last a long time, except for the parking brake which tends to seize too frequently.
Steering
The steering rack may start making noise around 50,000 km, but it doesn't affect its functionality.
