Overview and Common Failures

Body and Interior The body is quite sturdy, but due to its age, there are already areas of corrosion. Rust usually starts spreading from the lower part of the doors and rear fenders. The interior is made of cheap materials, with uneven gaps and no sound insulation. The electrical system is not much of a concern, just make sure to protect the control unit under the carpet. Engine The 2.0-liter Mazda FE and FE-DE gasoline engines are very reliable and durable. However, saving on oil can lead to valve lifter noise or ring sticking. The 2.0-liter turbo diesel is known for cracks in the cylinder head and fuel system failures. The 2.2-liter Mazda R2 diesel has a huge lifespan, but it only has 63 hp. Transmission The 5-speed manual gearbox is reliable, and its only complaint is oil leaks. The 4-speed automatic Aisin 03-72LE is also known for its excellent performance. The main problems here are related to the components of the full-time transmission. Weak points include drive shaft splines and vacuum hubs. Suspension The suspension lasts a long time, and only the stabilizer bushings are regularly replaced up to 100,000 km. Weak springs cannot handle heavy loads, and the rear shocks often leak. There are no major complaints about the steering rack and braking system from owners.
