Overview and Common Failures
Body
In this model, the body is galvanized and does not rust immediately, but the paint coating is weak. However, the suspension parts, exhaust system, and brakes quickly corrode. On specialized forums, there are often complaints about water appearing in the doors and rear lights.
Interior
The interior of this car is very budget-friendly both in terms of materials and sound insulation. Moreover, there are quite a few ergonomic flaws here, plus poor build quality. Electrical issues often occur with the steering wheel switch and the driver's door lock.
Engine
The 1.6-liter 8-valve K7M engine is renowned for its long lifespan due to its simple construction and cast iron block, but it frequently experiences oil leaks and electrical failures. Hydraulic compensators are not provided in the cylinder head, and the valve can be bent if the timing belt breaks. The 1.6-liter 16-valve K4M power unit has hydraulic compensators in the cylinder head and a more reliable ignition system with separate coils. Otherwise, it is the same. There is also a 1.2-liter D4F engine and a 1.5-liter K9K diesel engine for the European market.
Transmission
The 5-speed manual JR5 transmission with cable-operated gear selection mechanism is reliable. The only complaints are about oil leaks and bearing noise, but these occur only at high mileages. The 4-speed automatic DP2 has a poor reputation and has a separate article written about it.
Chassis
This hatchback has an impressive ground clearance and energy-intensive suspension, but average reliability. By 100,000 km, the hub bearings, tie rod ends, ball joints, front control arm bushings, and sometimes even the front shocks may require replacement. There are no complaints about the steering rack, but the brake mechanisms do not always last long.
